In 2017 a group of scientists successfully froze sperm from 16 different coral species, using liquid nitrogen.
The process is called cryopreservation and the purpose is to “save” the species before they go extinct.
In the future they'll be thawed and reintroduced to their natural habitat.
This, however, requires the global temperature to be reduced.
While waiting for that, the cryohabitat will be their new home.
I made digital sculptures of the 16 coral species an 3D-printed them for a physical interpretation of the
kryohabitat. This was part of an exhibition at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm January 2017.
